Team Talks
How to maximize individual development and team performance
Hi there,
You don’t have to choose between development and winning - you can have both.
What Should Half-Time / Between Periods Sound Like?
This is a highly engaged team with incredible task cohesion. Clearly, a lot of work has been done to create trust and autonomy. There are signs of a learning culture, peer to peer accountability with respect, and group problem solving.
Notice that when the coach addresses the team he focuses attetion on the “things that matter” - defense and rebounding. He does it in a way that is confident and poised, instilling belief in his team. The message is clear and simple.
A common mistake coaches make in team talks (pre-game, between periods, and post-game) is having too many points. Decide what matters the most and communicate it efficiently with confidence.
Life Lessons and Character Skills Through Sport
We have a responsibility to teach life lessons and character skills through our sport. If you are mindful and opportunistic you can use team talks to help nudge your athletes toward a better life.
Coach Woody Hayes uses humour inside of a message that he taking very serious. It catches the player’s attention and creates a shared understanding - a connection point between the coach and team.
Preparing to Address the Team
Think about how you want to be. What presence does your body language, eye contact, and delivery style provide to the room? It can be helpful choose a couple words to describe how you want to show up in front of your team. Some words I have chosen include; clear, strong, composed, open.
Think about what you want to say. Thinking about what to say in the moment is too late. I’m not one for scripts, but being prepared with main talking points is critical. It avoids rambling and allows for an economy of words.
