Maximize Development and Winning:
How to Shoot the Puck Harder:
Review of the article “An Analysis of Shots of Professional Ice Hockey Players of Different Level” by U. Zankavets
A strong correlation was found between the puck shot speed and strength of upper hand holding the stick, as well as stick stiffness.
Practice Plans that Win:
Listen to Bruce Cassidy share insight on how and when to box out at the net front.
Here is a great drill to practice boxing out:
Sens Re-Group (Video)
F1 pass puck low to high to point and get to net. Net front D deters net front and battles for body position. Point man sprints line and shoots for a stick. Repeat 3 times, alternating corners.
Coach spots puck for neutral zone re-group. Re-attack 5v2 vs. the net front D who gap up to defend the rush.
Ice Hockey Systems is the platform I use to design and share drills, practice plans, and systems.
Breakthrough Knowledge:
In every sport, there's a large number of people who - when presented with new ideas, stand firm and say, "That's not the way we do it here".
As a young coach, you need to decide how you deal with this.
OPTION 1 - Agree with them and don't try to change anything.
OPTION 2 - Disagree with them and push ahead with your idea anyway.
OPTION 3 - Listen to their reasoning, present an intelligent and inspired counter-argument and seek ways to influence their thinking over time through your results.
Remember this, eager young space cadets: Not everything that's old and established is WRONG. Not everything new and innovative is RIGHT.
Too many sports throw out all the old, established expertise (and experts) to follow the latest fads and the most vocal social media gurus when the reality is that a combination of what we know - and what we DON'T know is usually the best way forward.
