Hi there,
You don’t have to choose between development and winning - you can have both.
Maximize Development and Winning:
Mike Tomlin, Head Coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers talks about expectations and leadership in a team meeting.
As we enter the beginning of the hockey season, it’s a good idea to consider and define the expectations for your group. Tomlin’s expects that every player is a “guy on the rise”. What was good enough last year won’t be good enough this year.
You need to continually be a guy on the rise.
That is a reasonable expectation.
As opposed to just coming in here, putting in time.
The things that made you viable in the past are not the things that will make you viable moving forward.
You better be continually getting better.
Practice Plans that Win:
Bradley Warm-Up (click for video)
This warm up drill came from Brad Flynn, Assistant Coach for the Kitchener Rangers in the Ontario Hockey League. Brad is a former Brock Badger and coached with us last season.
Why I love this drill:
-Lots of players moving
-Time and space for goalies to warm up
-Reinforces habits such as shoulder checks, deception, communication, puck support, defensive sticks
Ice Hockey Systems is the platform I use to design and share drills, practice plans, and systems.
Breakthrough Knowledge:
If the kids have midterms - lighten the cognitive focus
If the group is having a blast in the warm-up activity - extend the activity
If 1/2 players are down - find ways to bring them up
No need to be rigid with your master plan - Coach. What. Is. In front. Of. You.
