Hi there,
You don’t have to choose between development and winning - you can have both.
Maximize Development and Winning:
Taking a holistic approach means you are viewing the player as a human being, taking the time to consider beyond an athlete's physical and technical needs to support their mental health, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Truly Coaching the Human with Alpo Suhonen (podcast)
Legendary Finnish coach, Alpo Suhonen is interviewed on the Coach's Road podcast. Suhonen is a philosopher - coach who has worked with the best hockey players in the world with international and NHL positions.
Practice Plans that Win:
Space creates time. Average players become good and good players become great with more time to make a play. The Hockey IQ Newsletter has a useful post on how to use Ice Hockey Pick Plays to create space.
Here is a drill you can use to emphasize picks in the offensive zone:
Go Go (video)
You will notice in the video that there are opportunities to use a pick. This drill will provide teachable moments.
Ice Hockey Systems is the platform I use to design and share drills, practice plans, and systems.
Breakthrough Knowledge:
The F1 pit stop has improved significantly since 1990.
F1 pit stop times: (video to show the pit stops in real time)
1990 - 8.95 seconds
2000 - 7.22 seconds
2010 - 4.12 seconds
2020 - 1.82 seconds
2023 - 1.78 seconds
Where can you find increased coordination and precision in your team?
