How Alabama Basketball Built it’s Best offense Ever

Taking the time to learn from other sports is an outsized opportunity. Like low-hanging fruit, it’s simple enough to grab, but most people do not. You have the whole tree to yourself.

This article on Alabama basketball is a bounty of ideas that can be adapted to hockey and any invasion based team sport. Here are three ideas from the article that I am thinking about:

• Offense = spacing + timing + ball movement + player movement + reading/decision making

• “Create the advantage - Keep the advantage - Use the advantage”

• Basketball efficiency shots

  • Free throws

  • Layups

  • Threes

  • *What is your sport’s version of efficiency shots?

For your Learning:

From passive reading to active learning: The Blank Sheet Method

The Blank Sheet Method:

1. Before reading, write what you know about the subject on a blank sheet.

2. After each reading session, add new information in a different color.

3. Review the sheet before your next reading session.

4. Store completed sheets in a binder for periodic review. (Hint: I often re-write them for clarity).
   

   

You can adapt this method to help retain and act on information you learn at coaching seminars and other off-season professional development experiences.

Cutting Hands Warm-up (video)

This warm up drill gives players the chance to work on playing through an opponent’s hands on defense and offense. It prepares the body for contact and gets the hands, legs, and brain ready for practice.
