Hi there,
You don’t have to choose between development and winning - you can have both.
Maximize Development and Winning:
Creating a Performance Culture (Training Ground Guru article and podcast)
BELGIUM'S Union Saint-Gilloise Sporting Director, Chris O'Loughlin leaves breadcrumbs on how to create a performance culture:
Define the culture
Match the players with the culture
Establish the values you can stand behind and what it looks like as a person and in performance
Recruit to your values. “You don’t need an angel - just a good soul”
Practice Plans that Win:
This is a fun way to reinforce the habit of competing for pucks on faceoffs. It shows the importance of wingers getting involved to win loose pucks. The team that wins possession of the puck gets to add a 4th player and plays the remainder of the rep with a 4v3 advantage.
Tips/ideas:
-Give points for faceoff wins
-Give a time limit for 4v3 attack. For example we did it last week with an 8 second time limit to attack the net. If they retrieved the puck after the attack they could keep going. If not, the rep is over. This allows for more reps on the faceoff.

Strategies for Coaching Performance with Dr Gary Bowman:
“It’s not stress that kills us; it is our reaction to it.” – Hans Selye
Keeping your composure as a leader or coach is essential to team performance. Some people seem to be naturally more calm while others have a tendency to react much stronger to stressful situations. Here are some tools that you can use to prepare yourself to react in a way that maintains a positive and competitive environment for your team.
