Hi there,
You don’t have to choose between development and winning - you can have both.
Maximize Development and Winning:
Find a Way to Win, the pursuit of modern football warfare. This article provides insight into recruiting strategy, building an identity, and finding a competitive advantage in the Army football program.
Army’s football program isn’t traditional—required military service puts a different spin on everything.
Army West Point Hockey:
For an inside look at the West Point hockey program, listen to the Coaching Project podcast with Zach McKelvie, Associate Head Coach at Army. After graduating from West Point, he spent 2 years on active duty before returning to hockey, playing the AHL. In our conversation we go deeper into his story as well as the following:
-Leadership lessons from West Point
-Thayer Method: reverse learning as a way to prepare for upcoming games
-Commander’s Intent
-Recruiting challenges and rewards in recruiting to Army West Point
Practice Plans that Win:
Ice Hockey Systems went to the Buffalo Sabres Development Camp and shared video of a small-area games they observed.
3v2 Keep Away (click for video)
The objective is to get the puck to your side and keep possession. 1 player (not designated) must stay on your side at all times.
This game develops technical skills and tactical awareness. Many teams will outnumber the puck side in defensive zone coverage. Learning to play in the confined space of the low zone and keep possession is critical. An important offensive tactic is to create space by getting the puck out of the corner. Playing with 3 players high in the zone will force the defending team to play man on man in the space of the high zone.
Ice Hockey Systems is the platform I use to design and share drills, practice plans, and systems.
Breakthrough Knowledge:
3 Costs of Leadership, Kirby Smart
You will have to make decisions that negatively affect people you care about.
You will be disliked, despite your best attempt to do the best for the most.
You will be misunderstood and won’t always have the opportunity to defend yourself.

KGB Vol 26: Coaches need coaching too
The profession of coaching is not 100% about improving others. Coaching requires searching for challenges, setting your own goals or improving your mental health and stress resilience.
