Hi there,
You don’t have to choose between development and winning - you can have both.

Maximize Development and Winning:
From my notes on “Belonging,” by Owen Eastwood
Whakapapa
Leaders have forgotten that their first role is to protect their people and that strong groups of homo sapiens form when we focus on what we share rather than what divides us.
You belong here.
Each of us are part of an unbreakable chain of people going back and forward in time. Back to our first ancestor at the beginning of time and into the future to the end of time. Each of us in this chain of people have our arms interlocked with those on either side of us.
We are unbreakable. Together immortal.
The sun slowly moves down this unbreakable chain of people. Each of us will have our time in the sun.
We are alive. We are strong.
You will not be judged by your money or celebrity or sense of self pride. You will be judged by what you did for our tribe when the sun is shining on us. We must be guardians of our tribe and of each other.
Watch this video to learn more about Whakapapa. Crafting a sense of belonging in your team is a significant step toward a shared vision and team cohesion.
Practice Plans that Win:
Cutting Hands Warm Up (Video)
Here is a great drill to warm up in your summer skill skates. You will activate your players with puck control, slight body contact, and the fundamental puck protection and takeaway skill of “cutting hands”.
X1 skates up the wall with the puck
X2 angles, cuts hands, strips puck and escapes pressure from X1 trying to regain possession
X2 uses deception to evade X1 FC then cuts hands for offensive position before passing to next player in X1 line.
Defenders in this drill use strong stick token pressure
Ice Hockey Systems is the platform I use to design and share drills, practice plans, and systems.
